ICF Foundation

Let’s just pretend I’m not massively behind on my posts…

I dunno how many of you have ever gotten a qoute to have a foundation poured, but it is EXPENSIVE. The average price we got to pour our walls was about $13,000, which was a bit more than we wanted to spend. After much math and calculations, we realized that doing it on our own out of block wouldn’t be much cheaper, and it would be a heck of a lot more work. Then my brother told us about ICFs, which stands for Insulated Concretr Forms. These are basically very large hollow styrofoam Legos. They have plastic nailers/brackets every 8″ to snap rebar into and to hang drywall onto. The foam is 2.5″ thick on each side, giving us a total of 5″ of insulating rigid foam after the walls are poured.

The cost came to around $8,000, which we felt was more doable. It would also save cost due to the fact that they are pre-insulated, and we can hang drywall directly onto them without having to build a 2×4 wall. So they’re pretty much really cool.

After all of the blocks were stacked and full of rebar, Patton put bracing inside and out.

Then the day came to pour our walls! We had to bring in a pump truck, which was absolutely enormous, as well as have three concrete trucks scheduled to come in succession to fill said pump truck.

Erwyn had great fun sitting in Daddy’s truck and watching, which I appreciated because that meant I could too!

Our special thanks to Jeff for helping stack the forms, and Christian for helping pour the walls!
